A Little Fun

Postby Tachigi on Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:30 am

Recently I was cleaning out my software and CD collection. I finally upgraded to Vista and found that a lot of software was "incompatible". I came across a CD that I purchased off of ebay back in 1998 for $5 bucks. Don't ask me why I purchased it because I have no idea, must of been cabin fever during the depths of winter. The CD is basically images someone took in 1995 of bonsai that they had come across.

Have no idea where these images were taken...some of the trees were done nicely and some not so much. The photographer also was not a professional as you will see. So with that said, thought I we would have some fun and I would periodically post a few at a time and invite your thoughts on these trees. I am pretty sure these will be fresh images of bonsai yet unseen on the web.

I like the trident very much but if it were mine I would probably compact the foliage a bit more and the apex looks a little crowded. I think I would also tilt it slightly to the right and center it a little more. I'd be interested to see this tree today.

OK...I can see the first set of pictures went over really well

Lets try two more..........what do you like or disike about these...I'll focus on conifers with these two since we have some rowdy coniferites that roam the halls here at BV.

Er, Interestink... Furry furry interestink...

LOL

I kinda like both trees, but the warty areas on the rock in the first one make me think of a toad's back...

and the second one... Umm, my first thought was ' ALIEN!!!!!!!!!!!!'
second thought was the top of the tree is a bit too wildly undefined.. its going too many different directions. The 3 new growth points and the little jin look like eye stalks
Third thought was OMG ALIEN doing SOMETHING ... ummm not PG

and its way too late, I need to get some SLEEP...

They both look in development stages to me. The first one has two left branches that look to be directly above each other and lack any interesting movement. The developing tree looks immature against its old trunk. The second tree also looks to be in development and as such is hard to be critical for that reason. Both nice material to work with however.

I like the look natural look of the larch I would definitely say it is a collected specimen. I think I would bend the apex back to the right a bit because it looks off balance to me. I really like the deadwood on the second one you can really see the flow of the grain. Although, I think the whole tree could be enhanced by shortening it, one because I think its just a little too tall and two because I'm not a fan of the taper-less leader it has now.

I love the first tree. It's the kind of tree that inspired me to start bonsai! The moss leading up to the trunk path is great and all the proportions (foliage, trunk, rock and moss) was put together extremely well as they do not compete with each other in the landscape as a whole. Will there be a point when the trunk wont need that support? Although the warty areas creep me out a bit too... LOL

I like the tree second also but in the picture the drift wood looks like it was made from sculpey or almost laffy taffy? Although I can't see how it would have that effect if I saw it in person!

Sick work:)

I like the top one for it gives me an idea for my San Hosea Juniper.

Thanks

First reactions:

The larch has character! It looks like a tree that has survived and thrived in spite of -- fill in the blank!

The yew -- most of it looks good, but I agree with Weebs: the top looks schizophrenic.

(Don't tell her I agreed with her.)

Even if I can't match a master's trees, I'll be the better for trying -- and so will my trees.
