Clarodendrum cascade

Postby PeterW on Tue Sep 29, 2009 2:11 am

This is a small clarodendrum that i received in a swap with a friend for an olive. The clarodendrum is a native here in Australia and grows in the coastal areas in Queensland. It has a very corky type of bark and has small white flowers, the leaves reduce very small. Quite a good plant for bonsai. This is the tree as i received it.

I repotted it recently and decided to give it a bit more room to grow before i pot it into a finished pot. (this decision was made easier due to the fact that the only suitable pot i had was too small!)
The first styling.

This is the plan Stan.

I've seen the two top images before Peter. Nice treat to see the rest. This is some outstanding material, I love the bark and that gnarled look. Is there some pictures you can point us to that show how people have dealt with the foliage on a more advanced (training) tree.

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Tom

As requested here is a picture of a much more refined Clarodendrum. It belongs to a friend of mine from Queensland and it has won numerous awards including the best tree at the recent Australian Associated Bonsai Convention held in Brisbane in May this year. It is a beautiful tree and shows great age due mainly to the very corky bark structure, the carving work is very natural looking when seen up close and personal. The artist has been practicing bonsai for around 20 years and has a collection that has to be seen to be believed. Very talented.

This is taken in 2006, it won the tree of the show at the Queensland Bonsai society show.

Thanks for digging this up Peter...I do like this material a lot. Your friend made the most out of the material he had...very impressive. Reminds me a bit of Honey Suckle here in the states. Some deciduous and tropical look good with deadwood and fits naturally some don't. This is a candidate that certainly does fit that bill.

I really like the tree, but I feel all that beautiful shari would benefit from a darker pot, thanks for posting.

keep it green,
Harry
