Crown Pruning Effects on Roots by Kim D. Coder

Heavy duty information from an academic study by Kim D. Coder, Professor Silvics/Ecology on the vascular links between roots and branches and how pruning one can affect the other.

Tom,
I did a quick read. I will need to re-read it several times to see how this aligns with my thoughts on bonsai pruning and responses.
Do you have any thoughts at this point.

Jerry,
I basically agree with the conclusions of this study and practice it in my field growing program. I do think that potted trees there might be a slight variable ... but I won't confuse the issue with those thoughts as they are negligible.

This study was part of the required reading when I went through the HoYoku School and I embraced it ever since. It has rewarded me with healthy trees that grow very quickly ...see the example below. Obviously other sound horticultural practices are coupled with this strategy.

My one regret is that this report isn't more reader friendly for our purposes. Seasonal changes are addressed but are not obvious for example. I think If one does read this and something clicks a re-read is worth it.

Tom,
I re-read the article. Makes lots of sense.
The difficult part is in applying this to our bonsai work. What lessons has this enforced for you and what lessons have you taken that don't work for your bonsai?
Do you have more of this sort of information available?
Jerry
PS thanks for alerting us to this article.

Hi Tom: Thanks for Kim Coder "Crown Pruning article" Did a read and re-read. Like explanation of role of stimuating Cytokinins on root tips. Sent Jerry something about recycling the signal that I was wondering about with tropicals.Feel free to read/comment, Dustin
