Tom I'll bow to your superior experience. Most of my collecting has been off of rock ledges in the Rockies. I'll try to deflect the wrecker.

And, no beer until all the tools have been put away. Safety first

Tom have question.

When you dig a tree out for a root ball.
do you dig as wide as the lowest branch?

I have some pines I'm looking at to dig up.

No Cambi, I base it off the trunk size as to how large I should dig for a root-ball. Below in the first picture you can see that the root-ball is being dug to what appears to be the outer edge of the branches . When in fact it was being dug for the size of the trunk. As you can see in the second picture. Not to put to fine a point on it in the last picture you can see that the branches on this yew that extended way past the root ball.

I try and collect a finished ball that is 2 times the diameter of the trunk, that is cut lines are 180 degrees from each other. example ....trunk size two inches, root ball cuts at 180 degrees from each other are 6 inches (2 of soil, 2 of trunk, 2 of soil).

Keep in mind that this is a generalization....type of soil, tree and other things must be considered.

Cheers, Tom

I think the biggest consideration for the size of the collected root ball is where you find the fine, feeder roots. If they're close to the trunk (typical for yews, I understand) then a modest root ball is good. Most of the pines I collect grow in pockets in granite. If they don't have feeder roots near the trunk then I take a pass on them, because I can't manage 6 - 10 foot long roots. I try clear gently around the trunk to get an idea if the tree is collectable from my perspective.

Cheers
Brian
