Mid-America Bonsai Show, 2009

Postby treebeard55 on Thu Aug 20, 2009 8:03 pm

Here are some pictures from the 32nd Mid-America Bonsai Show, held last weekend at the Chicago Botanic Garden. I'll post the pictures in several batches, to make viewing simpler.

The headliner for the show was Mr. Hiroshi Yamaji. Mr. Yamaji is a second-generation bonsai grower and teacher from near Osaka, Japan. Tho I had never heard of him until a few months ago, I think he turned out to be a fine choice as the visiting master.

Saturday afternoon he did a demonstration with this Austrian pine (Pinus nigra.) He first asked for ideas from the audience, and several were offered. Then he revealed what he had decided to do, and it was a good deal more ambitious than I had expected! I was glad for the chance to watch; this was the first time I'd ever watched this sort of procedure live.

Yamaji-san's asistant was Steve Jetzer, chosen both for his bonsai skills and (explicitly) for his strength!

The blue wrapping in the last pictures is veterinary bandage, made of a material called "coban" (TM?) Mr. Yamaji said it would need to stay in place for 3 years while the splits callous over and new bark grows

Even if I can't match a master's trees, I'll be the better for trying -- and so will my trees.

OK. Sorry, folks: for some reason my pictures aren't getting attached, or uploaded to ImagePoster.

So, if you're interested, here is a link to the same pictures on (shh!) another forum.

Start at post #10 for my pictures.

OH. Thanks, Tom.

I read the "Allowed Extensions and Sizes," below, saw "unlimited," and thought it meant I could just upload them straight from my kompootar as they were.

Does this also apply to images uploaded to Image Poster? I assume that's what one must use for embedded pictures, such as are used in progressions --- ??

Tom, I went thru and resized everything to maximum dimension of 500 px in any direction. But still, nothing came thru as an attachment.

Apparently there is still something I'm doing wrong. Is there a maximum size in Kb?

The one below it is 80.0 KB , 343 x 427px

Tom, I'm not sure either. My pics are in jpeg format, which is allowed; and smaller than the ones you just posted ... maybe Firefox doesn't like this site ...

Nope, I use Firefox as my default browser.

I wonder if it might have something to do with my security settings... but I can upload fine to B-Nut and B-Chat.
