Here a suitable container is picked out. Half that pot is filled with styrofoam.

Spaggy moss is packed in on the roots and covered with a towel then wrapped tight with wire.
Plenty of Towely jokes were heard.

It will be a while before those top roots can go. There were plenty of folks convinced the tree will not make it through all this work.

I hope to provide future pictures of this tree but will update either way.

The Demo resembled a Bonsai highwire act with lots of ooo's and ahhhh's. People looking on as death apears certain. In this show we must wait a little longer for the end of the act.

The entire day was incredible. Non-stop rain and even some snow but the people just kept coming. I mentioned to Teddy one of the co-owners how we seemed to be in a bubble there at the nursery. The rest of the country is in a recession and yet the line of customers was never less than 5-6 people long waiting to buy buy buy. Everything from starter trees to really expensive trees and pots were going out the door all day long. A caravan from Canada showed up and these folks were filling their vans and cars.

Bonsai is strong and growing in Massachusetts and New England.

Hey Tim,
Thanks for the pics...they are fine. I really would have loved to see the demo but the kids wouldn't have appreciated the high wire act like you or me 8) . As one who bought a nice tree and a nice pot on Saturday (for the 100th time it seems:lol:) , I will say that you can't do any better then at NEBG...wonderful trees and pots for everyone from beginners to serious bonsai officianados and the prices and the service are the best.

Nice series of pics Tim...kudos to you and thanks for posting. No doubt this will make a fine tree if it survives. Whats up with the aluminum on a juni....not what I expected...Hitosi must be on a budget.

Would be very, very interested to see a follow up pic this fall....Up for it?

Great coverage Tim and as a master we can only have confidence, Hiromi knows what he is on about. The big however is can we see the result one year on and will he have taken it to that next stage.

Ash :)

He visits every year. He even had some huge Azaleas shipped over just to work on while he's here.
I'll be sure to update as time goes on.

Hey Tom,
Haven't spoke with you in ages. Hope you are doing well.
I have been surprised also but most of the Japanese masters who've come to New England Bonsai have used aluminum wire - even when copper is available. When Kenji Miyata used it, I knew he had a bad right shoulder and he just found it easier (yet he was comfortable with both). Mr. Tsukada has been coming for 3 years now and only uses aluminum even when I offer him copper. Same with Mitsuo Matsuda. I don't really know the answer either since the latter two didn't speak any English. I can ask Hitoshi. It might come down to cost as you allude to but I don't think so.
I'll ask.

Thanks Tim, beautiful tree, nice job, the spread on it is 9 to 1 it won't make it to next summer. I hope I'm wrong. He broke all the cardinal rules on one tree.

Ciao,
Harry
