Oh My Rick....nice hook! Its the spitting image of the expensive Joshua Roth hook I bought ump-teen years ago cause I dug the wooden handle ........ knew I should have started this forum long ago :wink:

I've found, unless you're working on large trees, a chop stick works just fine, no one wants to damage the fine feeder roots on small trees.

You would be surprised how little damage these things actually do when used right, taking your time.

Drill stock can also be found as "high speed steel" or HSS. Stay away from carbide, you can't bend it, it'll just break.

I got a hoof pick, it looked like a screw drive bent , a friend grind it to a dull point and it cost me $1.45
I get to try it in Sept. potting season. oooooo!
watch out roots!
