Sour Grapes

Postby irene_b on Thu May 07, 2009 8:33 pm

The ants had a nice picnic and living quarters in this old grape...till today...
Let the carving begin!

Did a bit more carving today....
I finally broke out the bits I got from Dale Cochoy and fired up the flex shaft....
Was going great till I blew out and flipped the breaker (On list for hubby in the morning to fix)..

Looks like a good start Irene. I like the hollow at the base and I suggest you carry the hollow theme all the way up the trunk. At this point you are just texturing the trunk like I did. The idea of carving is to create shadows and visual interest that make viewers want a closer look.

LOL TG this thing has a lot of wood real estate that will be carved out! And I also love the hollow theme...which is what I have been doing...I carve till I can't raise my arms each day...
The height of this one is about 2+ feet tall...The Idea I have in mind is to leave a few bridges across it.

A little bit of carving each day.
Finding the veins and accenting the muscles without to much damage requires a lot of slow carving.

OK mom, how do you intend on carving out the middle to leave the bridges? Do you approach from the underside and work your way towards the top of the tree? Or do you carve in towards the middle and slowly connect the hollows?

A little each day, but still have a lot of carving to do..
Right now I do not worry about "finished carving" but just removing all that will not be needed.
And yup there is a lot of wooden real estate to cover.
